What Are 4D Number Plates?

4D number plates, also known as next-gen number plates, use precision laser-cut acrylic that gives the characters a raised, three-dimensional effect. They're called 4D to differentiate them from 3D gel plates.

The main difference between 3D and 4D plates is the material: 3D plates use a gel resin for a glossy, rounded look, whereas 4D plates use laser-cut acrylic for a bolder, sharper, more architectural design.

Characters on 4D plates are typically 3mm to 5mm in depth — significantly more elevated than the 1.7mm to 2mm of 3D gel plates, giving a far more dramatic visual impact.

Are 4D Number Plates Legal?

Yes — 4D plates are legal if they meet specific criteria set by the DVLA. This includes standards for size, font, spacing, and material to ensure plates are easy to read.

Characters must use Charles Wright typeface, and the plate must be manufactured to British Standard BS AU 145e. All Number 1 Plates 4D plates are 100% road legal and guaranteed to pass your MOT.
