What Are Number Plates?
Number plates (also called registration plates) are the alphanumeric identifiers legally required on every road-going vehicle in the UK. They link your vehicle to the DVLA database and must be displayed on both the front and rear of your car at all times.
UK number plates must comply with British Standard BS AU 145e, which governs character size, font (Charles Wright), spacing, reflectivity, and permitted colours. Front plates are white; rear plates are yellow.
At Number1Plates, we manufacture a full range of plate styles — from straightforward replacement plates to premium 4D laser-cut and 3D gel designs — all built to the same rigorous legal standard. Every plate we make is guaranteed road legal and MOT-compliant.

UK Number Plate Rules
Number plates in the UK are regulated by the DVLA. All road-legal plates must use the Charles Wright typeface, correct character sizes, and approved background colours. Plates cannot be altered, obscured, or made difficult to read.
Since September 2021, only white, yellow, and black are permitted on road-legal plates. Neon, coloured, or novelty plates are not legal on public roads.
When replacing plates, you will need to provide proof of entitlement to the registration (V5C, new keeper slip, or V778 retention certificate).
How Much Do Number Plates Cost?
Our standard replacement plates start from £12.49 for a single plate — making us one of the UK's most affordable plate makers without any compromise on quality or legal compliance.
Premium styles such as 3D gel or 4D laser-cut plates are priced higher to reflect the materials and manufacturing process, but all are still competitively priced with fast UK delivery included on qualifying orders.

Which Plate Type Is Right for Me?
We manufacture four main plate styles. Each one is fully road legal — it's simply a matter of personal preference and budget.
Standard / Replacement
The classic flat plate — exactly what you need when replacing a lost, damaged, or stolen plate. Clean, legal, and affordable. Printed characters on high-quality acrylic stock.
3D Gel Number Plates
Glossy, dome-shaped gel characters give a premium raised effect. Hugely popular upgrade from standard plates — eye-catching and road legal. Characters use a high-gloss polyurethane resin.
4D Acrylic Plates
Precision laser-cut acrylic characters with bold, architectural raised depth. The sharpest, most dramatic road-legal finish available — available in 4mm and 5mm options.
Show Plates
Not for road use — show plates can display any text or design, making them perfect for trade stands, garages, gifts, bedroom displays, or motorsport. No V5C required.

Number Plate FAQs
Everything you need to know about ordering, legal requirements, and delivery.
Do I need to provide proof of ownership to order number plates?
Yes — for any road-legal replacement plate, UK law requires us to verify your entitlement to the registration. You'll need to provide a copy of your V5C (logbook), new keeper supplement, or DVLA V778 retention document, along with valid photo ID. This is a legal requirement under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Show plates do not require any documentation.
Are your number plates MOT compliant?
Yes. Every road-legal plate we manufacture is fully compliant with British Standard BS AU 145e — the standard required to pass an MOT. This covers character font (Charles Wright), size, spacing, reflectivity, and background colour. Whether you order standard, 3D gel, or 4D plates, they will pass your MOT check without issue.
What is the difference between 3D gel and 4D number plates?
3D gel plates use a glossy polyurethane resin applied over printed characters to create a smooth, rounded, domed effect (typically 1.7–2mm raised). 4D plates use precision laser-cut acrylic characters individually bonded to the plate in depths of 4mm or 5mm, giving a bolder, sharper, more architectural look. Both are 100% road legal. The choice comes down to whether you prefer a soft, glossy raised appearance (3D) or a dramatic, angular statement (4D).
How long does delivery take?
Standard orders are typically dispatched within 1–2 working days once your documentation has been verified. We offer a range of delivery options including standard (3–5 days), next-day, and tracked services. Delivery timescales are shown at checkout. For urgent requirements, choose our express or next-day option at the time of order.
Can I add extras like a badge, border, or slogan to my plates?
Yes — our builder lets you personalise your plates with optional flag/country badges (UK, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland), a dealer slogan or custom text strip at the bottom, and a choice of border styles. All personalisation options are shown in a live preview so you can see exactly how your plate will look before ordering. Note that certain customisation options are only permitted if they comply with the BS AU 145e standard.
