What Are Short Number Plates?
Short number plates, also called shortened or compact plates, are narrower than standard number plates. They're designed for vehicles with private registrations that have fewer characters than a standard registration — such as cherished dateless marks, initials, or short words.
Rather than having a standard-length plate with excessive blank space either side of the characters, a short plate is sized correctly to the number of characters being displayed — giving a proportionate, professional finish.
Are Short Plates Legal?
Yes — short number plates are legal for road use provided they meet all DVLA requirements. Character size, spacing, font (Charles Wright), and materials must all conform to BS AU 145e. Our short plates are always road legal and MOT compliant.
Are Short Plates DVLA Approved?
Yes — provided all character size, spacing, and material standards are met. The DVLA does not prescribe a minimum plate width, so short plates are permitted when the characters are correctly sized and spaced.
